Many families of the congregation are away on weekends during the summer. Wanting to keep in contact with them in a fun and interactive way, the children were asked about a symbol that families might carry with them as they travel to remind them of the church. While many creative ideas were explored (and some not given a second thought), the children picked up on a bow tie which is the neck wear of choice by the pastor, Andrew Miller.
Origami bow ties were born and were created in a variety of colors and patterns, each with a sticker seal of the congregation in the center. Congregation members were encouraged to take a bow tie and carry it with them when they were away from the church. They were asked to take a picture "wearing" it and post their photos to the church Facebook group or email it in.
Photos arrived from all across the country throughout the summer months. Printed copies were posted on an over-flowing "Where in the World is First Presbyterian?" bulletin board near the church narthex and electronic versions were used in the weekly e-newsletter and in the weekly worship PowerPoint. Not to mention the stream of comments collected in the church's Facebook group!
